Safety Tips
Keep safety in mind before, during, and after a storm, and follow these safety tips.
Treat all power lines as if they are energized. Beware of lines hidden by debris or in trees.
Call 911 or EMEPA to report downed power lines, and warn others in the area to stay away.
Do not connect a generator directly to your home’s wiring. This can energize power lines and put our linemen at risk. Also, do not operate a generator in standing water or use it in an enclosed area.
Turn around; don’t drown. Avoid flooded areas, and do not drive through unknown pools of water. Be especially cautious driving at night.
Move over and slow down when driving by emergency personnel and utility workers along roadways. It’s the law.

Power Restoration
When a major outage occurs, it takes more than the flip of a switch to get power back to all of our members. Our employees must follow a very detailed plan to restore electric service as safely and quickly as possible.
How Power Is Restored

We focus on the biggest repairs first to restore the most members. This means generating facilities, high-voltage transmission towers, and lines that feed distribution substations.

Substations are next. A repair here can bring power to a large number of homes and businesses.

Distribution three-phase lines are then checked. They carry reduced-voltage electricity to towns, communities, and subdivisions.

Next, we check the single-phase lines, which carry electricity to utility poles or underground transformers outside homes and other buildings. Critical facilities such as hospitals and fire and police stations take priority here, followed by restoration to the greatest number of consumers.

Finally, we repair any service lines between your home and a transformer on a nearby pole that may have been damaged. This may keep you in the dark while your neighbors have power.
